About
Prof. Dr. ir. T.B. (Bas) Rodenburg is a Professor of Animal Welfare at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Population Health Sciences and the Animals in Science & Society group. His research focuses on improving animal welfare assessment methods, particularly behavioral indicators and techniques to 'ask' animals about their living conditions. Key areas include welfare of group-housed animals, precision livestock farming, and cognitive bias testing. He chairs the Animal Welfare committee and collaborates with the Centre for Sustainable Animal Stewardship (CenSAS) to engage society on animal welfare issues.
Research emphasizes behavioral and environmental interventions to enhance welfare, such as calf-cow housing, dehorning ethics, and grazing benefits. He actively participates in policy discussions, media commentary, and interdisciplinary projects like the EU's Best Practice Hens initiative. Rodenburg's work bridges science and practice, advocating for animal-centered approaches in livestock farming.
Publications (2023–2024) address automated welfare monitoring, light effects on poultry behavior, and transitions to cage-free systems. Media engagements highlight societal debates on animal welfare, including calf transport abuses and slaughterhouse practices. His academic contributions span over 160 papers and involve roles in editorial boards, conferences, and advisory committees.
