Prof. Sébastien Marcel is a Senior Researcher at Idiap Research Institute (Switzerland) and heads the Biometrics Security and Privacy group. He holds a dual academic appointment as Professor at the University of Lausanne's School of Criminal Justice (UNIL) and Lecturer at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). His PhD in Signal Processing was obtained from Université de Rennes I (2000).
His research spans biometrics security, including face/speaker/vein recognition, presentation attack detection (spoofing, morphing attacks, deepfakes), and template protection. Core domains include computer vision, pattern recognition, and privacy-preserving AI systems.
Prof. Marcel directs the Swiss Center for Biometrics Research and Testing, overseeing product certifications. He serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Biometrics and Identity Science and edited the Springer Handbook of Biometrics Anti-Spoofing (Editions 1-3).
