Professor Sven Plein is a Clinical Professor of Cardiology at the University of Leeds, where he leads the Department of Biomedical Imaging Science and holds an honorary Consultant Cardiologist contract at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He trained in Medicine at Phillips University in Marburg, Germany (MD, 1995), and earned a PhD from the University of Leeds (2004). His research focuses on advancing cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly myocardial perfusion MRI and cardiometabolic disease in diabetes. He has secured over £20M in grants, including a British Heart Foundation programme grant, and published over 350 papers.
Professor Plein’s professional roles include former President of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Vice President of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI). He serves on editorial boards, including as Senior Associate Editor of the European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging. He is a key figure in education, leading European CMR certification, authoring textbooks, and supervising PhD/MD students.
His affiliations include the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine and the Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Research Centre. He collaborates across disciplines to advance imaging applications in clinical practice and metabolic disease.
