Sven Modell

Sven Modell is a Professor of Management Accounting at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. He holds Visiting Professorships at the Norwegian School of Economics and Turku School of Economics. His research focuses on institutional, political, and social aspects of management accounting, with a particular emphasis on qualitative methodologies and critical realism. He has conducted studies across diverse sectors such as public healthcare, higher education, government, and state-owned enterprises in multiple countries.

Modell earned his PhD in Business Administration from Lund University (1998) and previously held a Chair in Accounting at Stockholm University School of Business. He serves as an Associate Editor for Accounting and Business Research and European Accounting Review, and leads the European Accounting Association's PhD Mentoring Initiative. His research interests also include methodological pluralism and the societal relevance of management accounting, particularly in contexts like China and Thailand.

His work explores themes such as performance measurement in public sectors, institutional theory applications, and the evolving 'New Space' economy. He has been awarded the Mary Parker Follett Award (2019) for his paper on corporate social responsibility. Modell actively supervises doctoral students focusing on sociological perspectives in management accounting.
