About
Dr. Suzanne Maher is the Chief Research Officer at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Professor of Applied Biomechanics in Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University. Her research focuses on biomechanics, knee joint repair, and non-degradable implant development.
- 1994: BEng in Mechanical Engineering, University College Dublin
- 1996: MEng in Mechanical Engineering, University College Dublin
- 2001: PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Trinity College Dublin
Dr. Maher has pioneered intra-operative sensors to quantify joint contact mechanics and developed non-degradable polymer implants for cartilage repair, leading to the first life-sciences startup from HSS. Her work bridges biomechanics, biomaterials, and clinical orthopedics.
Notable awards include:
- Excellence in Mentorship Award, ORS (2020)
- Silver Medal, Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (2020)
- Fellow, ASME (2016)
- AIMBE Fellow (2016)
She co-directs the HSS Orthopaedic Soft Tissue Research Program and co-founded the HSS-CU CAMEO Center for cross-disciplinary collaboration. Her NIH-funded research includes studies on meniscectomy impacts and osteoarthritis prevention.
