About
Dr. Susie Shapiro is an Associate Professor of Haematology at the University of Oxford, where she combines her role as a consultant haematologist in the Oxford Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre with research at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM) in collaboration with Prof. Adam Mead. She holds the position of MRC CARP Fellow and serves as the Director of the Oxford Haemophilia Centre and OUH lead for Anticoagulation.
Dr. Shapiro's research focuses on the mechanisms of thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms, particularly polycythaemia vera. Her work aims to improve cardiovascular outcomes through risk stratification, identifying mechanisms of increased thrombotic risk, and developing targeted therapies. She is investigating the role of the JAK2 inhibitor ruxolitinib in reducing thrombotic risk and studying platelet and neutrophil activation in thrombosis development. Her clinical practice specializes in haemostasis and thrombosis, with particular interests in anticoagulation optimization, comorbidities in haemophilia and aging, and innovative haemophilia treatments.
Analysis of Dr. Shapiro's recent publications reveals a strong focus on thrombosis mechanisms, haemophilia treatment advancements, and bleeding disorder management. Her work spans clinical trials, real-world evidence studies, and molecular investigations into platelet function and coagulation. Key themes include gene therapy implementation, inhibitor management in haemophilia, and the intersection of aging with bleeding disorders.
- MRC CARP Fellowship
- National awards for anticoagulation optimization
Dr. Shapiro serves as Principal or Chief Investigator for more than 10 clinical trials. She actively collaborates with numerous national and international organizations including Thrombosis UK, the Haemophilia Society, the Platelet Society, and the European Haemophilia Consortium. She chairs the Comorbidity Working Party of the UK Haemophilia Doctors Association and is a member of the Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Blood Disorders, working to improve healthcare, support education, and ensure patient involvement in research priorities and service development.
Her research is conducted through the Oxford Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre and the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, where she collaborates with Prof. Adam Mead and other researchers to investigate the mechanisms of thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms and develop targeted therapies for improved patient outcomes.
