About
Dr. Susanne Schmidt is a Senior Lecturer and Student Advisor in the Department of Geography at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University, where she has been working since 2007. She also serves as the Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer of the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences since 2023. Her academic background includes geography studies at the University of Cologne and a doctorate from the University of Bonn.
Dr. Schmidt's research focuses on:
- Cryosphere dynamics and changes
- High Mountain Research in the Himalayas and Alps
- Remote sensing applications in environmental monitoring
- Human-Environmental Interactions in mountain regions
- Land use changes and urbanization in high mountain areas
Her work examines changes in the cryosphere and associated natural hazards in high mountain regions using remote sensing data. She has contributed significantly to understanding glacier dynamics, particularly in the Trans-Himalaya of Ladakh and the Nanga Parbat region. Her recent publications show a growing interest in mountain urbanization and socio-hydrological systems in high mountain regions, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of her research that bridges physical geography with human-environment interactions.
Dr. Schmidt teaches courses on Remote Sensing, Physical Geography of High Mountains, and Human Environmental Interaction in the Himalaya, and leads excursions through the HeiCo program. Her leadership extends to her role as Deputy Equal Opportunities Officer, demonstrating her commitment to academic service and inclusivity within the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences.
