Susanne Murphy

Susanne Murphy serves as a Distinguished Lecturer and Coordinator of Public Relations & Digital Media, Minor in Communication, and the Welcome Project within the Communication, Film, and Media Studies Department at the College of Arts and Sciences, University of New Haven.

Her educational credentials include:

• Sixth-Year Degree M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Administration from Southern Connecticut State University
• M.A. in English from Yale University
• B.A. in English from Fordham University
• Connecticut State Certification as Superintendent of Schools, Intermediate Administrator, and Teacher

Professor Murphy's research centers on children's literature, critical literacy, and human communication, with recent emphasis on postmodernism in picture books, multimodal storytelling, and humanity's intersection with artificial intelligence. Past work explored Spenser's poetry, education of academically talented students, technology integration in classrooms, and digital-age plagiarism. Her PK-12 teaching and administrative background informs her strong advocacy for equity and social justice in educational contexts.

She directs student teaching programs and coordinates academic initiatives including the Public Relations & Digital Media minor and Welcome Project. Professor Murphy gained media recognition when The New York Times published her letter to the editor responding to David Brooks' article on gender disparities. Outside academia, she cultivates interests in poetry, gardening, and aspires to write a murder mystery incorporating footwear.
