About
Susana Marcos is a Professor and Director of the Center for Visual Science at the University of Rochester, with joint appointments in Optics and Ophthalmology. She holds a visiting professorship at the Institute of Optics, Spain. Her research focuses on visual optics, ocular imaging, and corneal biomechanics, with contributions to intraocular lens design, myopia, and presbyopia. Dr. Marcos earned her PhD in Physics from the University of Salamanca and previously led the Institute of Optics, CSIC (Spain).
Her research integrates advanced optical technologies like adaptive optics and OCT to study eye structure and function. Key projects include developing diagnostic tools and treatments for cataracts, corneal diseases, and refractive errors. She has spun off companies (Plenoptika, 2EyesVision) commercializing technologies like Quicksee and SimVis.
Dr. Marcos has published over 210 papers, holds 23 patents, and led prestigious grants including ERC Advanced Grants (PRESBYOPIA, SILK-EYE) and NIH grants. Her honors include the Edwin Land Medal, Adolph Lomb Medal, and multiple international fellowships.
She advises a multidisciplinary lab team and collaborates with institutions worldwide. Her work bridges optics, engineering, and medicine to advance vision science and clinical practice.
