Northeastern UniversityAbout
Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli is a Research Professor in the Psychology Department at Northeastern University, affiliated with the Center for Cognitive and Brain Health and the Whitfield-Gabrieli Lab. Her research focuses on understanding the brain basis of psychiatric disorders, particularly schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, autism, and ADHD, with an emphasis on early detection, precision psychiatry, and innovative non-invasive treatments. She advocates for mindfulness meditation and neurofeedback as low-cost interventions to address mental health crises in adolescents.
Her work integrates multimodal neuroimaging techniques to study brain activity and its physiological sequelae on mental health across the lifespan. Key projects include using fMRI to predict schizophrenia through brain patterns, investigating the impact of mindfulness on brain activity in teens, and developing tools for personalized mental health interventions. She has secured grants for advanced technologies like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to advance causal mechanism studies.
Whitfield-Gabrieli’s lab, the EPIC Brain Lab, aims to bridge clinical populations with effective tools for early detection and individualized treatments. Her research vision includes creating a future where mental health interventions are as accessible and precise as traditional medical diagnostics.
