Susan Robertson is a Senior Lecturer and Visiting Research Fellow in Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Brighton's School of Humanities and Social Science. She holds roles as Academic Programme Leader for Architecture and Planning, and previously led the Architectural and Urban Design MA program. Her academic journey includes degrees from the University of Bath (BSc(Hons)), Polytechnic of Central London (Diploma in Architecture), and Royal Holloway University of London (Masters in Cultural Geography).
Robertson’s research focuses on urban mobilities, infrastructures like elevated highways, and spatial representations. Key themes include urban injustice, street spaces, and the interplay between designed and lived environments. She collaborates across disciplines in the Experimental Design Practices, Cities, Injustice and Resistance research groups, and the Arts and Wellbeing, Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics centers.
Her recent articles (2016–2024) explore contested spaces, urban utopias, and mobility through case studies in Brighton, Havana, and other global cities. Supervision interests span architecture, cultural geography, and urban design, with ongoing mentorship of projects on public spaces, urban heritage, and waterfront regeneration.
Robertson’s professional practice includes roles in architectural firms in London, Sydney, and Monterey, including work with Denys Lasdun on major projects like the European Investment Bank extension in Luxembourg. She founded her own practice in 1994, specializing in residential and educational design.
