Susan L. Ivey is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley's School of Public Health and Director of Research at Health Research for Action (HRA), a UCB-affiliated center focused on reducing health disparities. She holds a MD from St. George's University School of Medicine (1981), a BS/BA in Biological Sciences/Chemistry from University of California, Irvine (1977), and a BA in Psychology from University of Southern California (1975). Her Master's in Health Services Management and Policy (1995) is from George Washington University.
Her research focuses on healthcare disparities, immigrant health (particularly cardiovascular risks and diabetes), Medicaid policy, and healthy aging in Asian Americans. She has authored 35 peer-reviewed publications, including a seminal NEJM article on race-ethnicity data in clinical care. Her leadership roles include serving as AMWA President (2006-2007) and co-chair of the AMA-led Commission to End Health Care Disparities.
At HRA, she co-leads participatory research on health equity, emphasizing low-income populations and underrepresented groups. Her work bridges clinical practice, policy, and community engagement to address systemic health inequities.
