Susan Grunewald is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Louisiana State University (LSU), part of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Her research focuses on Soviet and German history, with a particular emphasis on World War II, the Cold War, and innovative applications of Digital Humanities and GIS. She holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University (2019), alongside MA (2014) and BA degrees (2011) from the same institution and Lafayette College.
Her work explores topics such as German prisoners of war in the Soviet Union, memory studies, and spatial analysis. Notable projects include digital gazetteer development and spatial methodologies for historical research. She teaches courses on modern Europe, digital history, and Russian history at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Her articles highlight interdisciplinary approaches, combining traditional historical research with digital tools to analyze POW experiences, spatial patterns, and historical geographies. Recent works include studies on Siberian memory narratives and collaborative GIS projects.
