Susan Docherty

Susan Docherty is a Professor of New Testament and Early Judaism at Newman University, UK. She holds affiliate memberships with the Irish Institute for Catholic Studies and the International Advisory Board of the Irish Theological Quarterly. Her academic journey began with a BA, MA, and MPhil from the University of Cambridge, followed by a PhD from the University of Manchester. She has been a leading figure in biblical studies since 2000, serving as Head of Theology at Newman and contributing to major academic projects like the Journal of New Testament Studies special edition (2015).

Her research focuses on early Jewish and Christian biblical interpretation, particularly the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, Septuagint studies, and pseudepigrapha. She has supervised doctoral research on topics like the textual analysis of Codex Bezae and near-death experiences in classical literature. Docherty has presented at major conferences including the European Association of Biblical Studies and the Society of New Testament Studies.

Her awards include the William Barclay Fellowship (2016) and Mary Ward Fellowship (2020). She has reviewed for journals such as Dead Sea Discoveries, presses like Cambridge University Press, and grant agencies including the European Science Fund. Her publications span books like The Jewish Pseudepigrapha (2014) and edited volumes on topics like the Book of Revelation and Exodus motifs in early literature.
