Professor Susan Deacy holds the position of Professor of Classics at the University of Roehampton, School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She is a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her academic journey includes roles as Principal Lecturer (2011), Senior Lecturer (2007), and Lecturer (2005) at Roehampton, with prior teaching experience at the Universities of Wales, Keele, Leeds, and Manchester. She served as Käthe-Leichter-Gastprofessorin für Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung at the University of Vienna (2010/11).
Her research focuses on ancient Greek religion, mythology, gender, and sexuality, with a growing emphasis on autism and classical mythology. Ongoing projects include a book on Athena’s role in mythological paradigms (contracted to OUP), a Routledge textbook on classical mythology, and contributions to the ERC-funded 'Our Mythical Childhood' project. She is Series Editor of the 'Gods and Heroes of the Ancient World' series and editor of the Bulletin of the Council for University Classics Departments.
Her pedagogical contributions include equality and diversity toolkits for classics practitioners and workshops on inclusive teaching. She actively blogs on topics like autism and mythological education. Supervised PhD students explore themes such as combat trauma in ancient Greece, feminist receptions of Medusa, and mythological sexual assaults in oratory.
Key awards include the National Teaching Fellowship (2015), Principal Fellow of HEA (2016), and Top 30 Mythology Blog (2018). Her academic affiliations include roles with the Hellenic Society, Classical Association, and Women’s Classical Committee UK.
