Susan D Newman

Susan D Newman is an Associate Professor and Director of the PhD in Nursing Science program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Nursing. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN).

Research Interests
Dr. Newman specializes in spinal cord injury rehabilitation, focusing on peer mentoring and self-management strategies to improve community participation and quality of life. Her work employs community-engaged research methodologies, including innovative techniques like Photovoice, which empowers individuals with spinal cord injuries to document their lived experiences.

She has secured funding from prestigious organizations such as the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), SCTR Pilot Projects Program, and the Rehabilitation Nursing Foundation.

Her dissertation research on accessible parking laws in Charleston led to successful advocacy efforts that changed South Carolina legislation, demonstrating her commitment to translating research into policy improvements.
