Sunyoung Yang is an Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Toronto (Canada) and B.A./M.A. in Sociology from Yonsei University (South Korea). Her research focuses on new media's societal impacts, particularly youth, labor, and gender issues in Korea/East Asia, alongside technological utopianism and digital futures.
Key projects include her upcoming book Online User Communities and Cultural Politics in South Korea and a second manuscript examining Asia Pacific youth and new technologies. She directs the Korean Studies program and collaborates in the Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) initiative. Active in global networks, she co-founded the Haja Center, led Asia Pacific Next Generation (APNG) initiatives, and participated in Internet Governance Forum activities.
Teaching includes courses on Korean culture, society, and film (e.g., KOR 251, KOR 352). Her long-term research goal involves real-time documentation of digital technology evolution, including AI and quantum computing developments.
