Sunah Choi

Sunah Choi is currently serving as Acting Professor for the Sculpture Class in the Art Department at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart since 2024/2025. She maintains her studio at the Weißenhof Campus in the Sculpture Building, Room 28. Previously, she held teaching assignments at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart (2024, 2020) and Muthesius Academy of Art and Design Kiel (2022).

Choi's artistic practice centers on sculpture and spatial installations, with a particular focus on architectural elements, glass constructions, and material transformations. Her work explores the relationship between interior and exterior spaces, often transforming everyday objects like furniture into architectural interventions. She demonstrates a keen interest in light studies, transparency, and spatial perception through her use of glass, steel, and painted surfaces.

Her most recent works from 2023-2025 show a continued evolution of her exploration of maquettes, vitrines, and architectural fragments. These pieces demonstrate her interest in modular systems, spatial organization, and the transformation of domestic elements into sculptural forms. The works often incorporate precise geometric arrangements while maintaining a sensitivity to material qualities and spatial relationships.

Choi has received numerous prestigious awards including the Hannah Höch Prize (2018), multiple scholarships from the Kunstfonds Foundation in Bonn (2023, 2022, 2020, 2002), a scholarship from the Academy of Arts in Berlin (2021), and an artist residency at Lenikus in Vienna (2013).

As an educator, Choi oversees a vibrant studio class with numerous MFA students whose practices span sculpture, installation, painting, and performance. She initiated the 'KABUFF' exhibition series that provides students with opportunities to develop and present solo exhibitions. Her mentorship approach emphasizes conceptual development alongside technical execution, encouraging students to explore the relationship between artistic practice and spatial contexts.
