Dr. Suman Rice is a Reader in Reproductive Physiology at City St George's, University of London, affiliated with the Institute of Medical and Biomedical Education and the Neuroscience & Cell Biology Research Institute. She serves as Coordinator of the SGUL Personal Tutor System and leads the Year 3 BSc module in Science of Reproduction. Dr. Rice joined St George's in 2003 and has been a principal investigator since 2007.
She holds a BSc in Physiology (1986) and PhD (1994) from King's College London, followed by an MSc in Human Reproductive Biology from Royal Postgraduate Medical School after a career break. Her postdoctoral training was completed at Imperial College London under Professors Steve Franks and Kate Hardy.
Dr. Rice's research focuses on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), investigating disrupted follicle growth mechanisms, ovarian steroidogenesis, and metabolic signaling pathways. Her work examines environmental pollutant impacts on fertility and fetal development, with current projects on:
- Vitamin D deficiency and insulin resistance correlations in PCOS
- Insulin signaling abnormalities in granulosa cells
- Anti-Müllerian hormone regulation
- Environmental toxicology effects on gonadal development
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on reproductive endocrinology, particularly PCOS pathophysiology, metformin mechanisms, and ovarian cell biology. Recent work shows increasing emphasis on environmental toxicology and vitamin D interactions with reproductive function.
Awards & Leadership:
- Chair of Society for Reproduction and Fertility (SRF)
- Committee member for Roger Short Medal for Reproductive Biology (2023)
- Awards Assessment Panel for Daphne Jackson Trust
- External examiner for Edinburgh University Reproductive Biology program
Teaching & Advising: Dr. Rice lectures across biomedical science programs, leads the Science of Reproduction module, and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. She coordinates university-wide pastoral support systems as Personal Tutor Coordinator.
Collaborations: Works with Prof. Claus Yding Andersen (Copenhagen) on fetal development, Dr. Tim Marczylo (UKHSA) on reproductive toxicology, and St George's colleagues on clinical endocrinology research.
