Sukaina Hirji

Sukaina Hirji is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Philosophy, within the School of Arts and Sciences. She specializes in Ancient Greek philosophy, normative ethics, and feminist philosophy, with a focus on the intersection of these fields. Her research explores moral agency under oppression, ethical theory, and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics.

She holds a PhD from Princeton University (2016), an MA from Queen’s University (2010), and a BA (Honors) from the University of Alberta (2006). Her work has been published in journals such as Philosophers’ Imprint, Ethics, and Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.

Key research areas include oppressive double binds, moral psychology, and the role of contemplation in Aristotelian ethics. Recent publications address how oppression undermines moral agency and the structure of practical reason in ancient eudaimonism.

Hirji has received awards such as the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching (2022) and the National Humanities Center Fellowship (2021, declined). She serves as an Assistant Editor at Philosophers’ Imprint and actively contributes to professional service, including diversity initiatives in philosophy.

Her teaching spans ethics, ancient philosophy, and feminist theory, with courses like Love and Sex and Aristotle’s Teleology. She mentors numerous graduate and undergraduate students, emphasizing inclusive pedagogy and critical engagement with philosophical traditions.
