Sufeng Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Ottawa (Faculty of Arts). Her research focuses on classical Chinese poetry, vernacular fiction, and gender studies, with special attention to women’s writing in imperial China (16th-18th centuries). She coordinates the Asian Studies program and teaches courses such as Women in Chinese Literature and Introduction to Chinese Culture.
Research Interests: Her work examines courtesan culture, gentry women poets, reclusion modes, and intellectual history. She explores themes like companionate marriage, religious syncretism, and the role of poetry in social dynamics.
Teaching: She instructs courses on East Asian cinemas, Japanese culture, and advanced Chinese language. Office hours are Thursdays 3:00–4:00 PM in Hamelin Hall, Room 252.
Publications: Her work appears in Nan Nü: Men, Women and Gender in China, analyzing poetic exchanges between spouses in the Qing era and prefatory rhetoric in women’s poetry collections.
