Sue Feldman

Sue Feldman is a Professor and Director of Graduate Programs in Health Informatics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Health Professions. She holds dual appointments in the School of Medicine as a Senior Scientist in the Informatics Institute and the Center for the Study of Community Health. With over 30 years as a Registered Nurse, her work integrates clinical practice with informatics, focusing on health information systems for social protections. She chairs accreditation site visits for CAHIIM and serves as 2023-2024 Chair of AMIA's Academic Forum.

Dr. Feldman earned dual PhDs in Information Technology and Higher Education from Claremont Graduate University, alongside master's and bachelor's degrees in related fields. Her research spans telehealth implementation, health information exchange, and the impact of reimbursement models on healthcare quality. She actively publishes in top-tier journals and contributes to national forums as a program chair.

Her teaching spans Clinical Informatics, MS Health Informatics, and PhD programs. She has pioneered cybersecurity simulations for students and explored pandemic-era communication strategies. Key collaborations include developing a substance use disorder web application and analyzing opioid use disorder case detection via NLP.

Dr. Feldman's work bridges policy and practice, addressing challenges like nursing home staffing economics and emergency department crowding. She advocates for interprofessional collaboration, leading initiatives such as the 'Forge' student-alumni mentoring network. Her efforts aim to advance learning health system competencies and address social determinants of health through technology.
