About
Subrata Sarkar is a full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), specializing in turbomachinery, turbulence, CFD, LES/DNS and experimental fluid mechanics/heat transfer. He earned a PhD from IIT Madras in 1995, an ME from IISc Bangalore in 1986 and a BE from Bengal Engineering College, Calcutta University in 1984.
Research interests revolve around advancing understanding of turbomachinery flows using high-fidelity computational and experimental techniques. His work spans:
- Turbomachinery aerodynamics and heat transfer
- Large-eddy and direct numerical simulations of turbulent flows
- Vortex dynamics and wake–boundary-layer interactions
- Experimental fluid mechanics and heat transfer measurements
His recent publications focus on vortex dynamics of cylinder wakes, unsteady flows in low-pressure turbine passages and flow structures induced by periodic wakes on turbine blades.
Scientific awards & distinctions:
- Review Chair, ASME Gas Turbine India Conference 2014
- Member, Propulsion Panel, AR&DB, Government of India 2010-2012
- Visiting Fellowship, University of Surrey, UK 2001-2003
- Member of ASME since 2005
- Reviewer for leading ASME, IMechE and other journals
Prof. Sarkar’s group contributes to both fundamental turbulence research and applied turbomachinery design, leveraging state-of-the-art CFD tools and experimental facilities at IIT Kanpur.
