About
Stuart Walsh is an Associate Professor in Civil & Environmental Engineering at Monash University, affiliated with the Resources Engineering division. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Melbourne and has held postdoctoral roles at institutions including the University of Minnesota and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Before joining Monash in 2018, he founded Stone-Code Pty Ltd and worked at the University of New South Wales.
His research focuses on geospatial economic assessments for mineral and renewable resources, notably leading the development of Bluecap—a tool used by Geoscience Australia for projects like the Hydrogen Economic Fairways Tool (HEFT) and Economic Fairways Mapper. This work earned him the 2023 Eureka Prize for Innovative Research in Sustainability. His current projects include economic fairways assessments for green steel, ammonia, and aviation fuels.
Key collaborations involve UN Sustainable Development Goals, computational geoscience, and engineering economics. He has led or contributed to projects such as the Australia-Japan Lithium Supply Chain Symposium and the Resourcing Australia's Prosperity Initiative. His research outputs span geomechanical modeling, BIM cost control frameworks, and renewable energy resource analysis.
Dr. Walsh is actively involved in PhD supervision, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to resource development and decarbonization. His work bridges academia, industry, and policy, with media engagements highlighting Australia’s green energy opportunities.
