Stuart Semmel is a Senior Lecturer in History & Humanities at Yale University, currently serving as Associate Head of Pauli Murray College. He earned his A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. His scholarship focuses on modern British history, British imperial history, global history, political thought, and historical consciousness.
He is the author of Napoleon and the British (Yale, 2004), which was shortlisted for the Longman/History Today Book of the Year prize, examining British political uses of Napoleon Bonaparte. His current research investigates early 19th-century British print culture and propaganda.
His teaching portfolio includes courses on British political development (1780-1914), British imperial history, global history circa 1800, and historical consciousness in literature, film, and television. He has taught at multiple institutions including the University of Delaware, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, American University, Peking University, and Yale-NUS College.
