Stuart Russell is Professor (and former Chair) of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, where he holds the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering. He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery at UC San Francisco and Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Council on AI and Robotics.
He received his B.A. with first-class honours in physics from Oxford University (1982) and Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University (1986).
Russell's research spans foundational and applied artificial intelligence, including machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, knowledge representation, planning, real-time decision systems, multitarget tracking, computer vision, computational physiology, seismic monitoring, and AI ethics. His current work addresses existential risks from autonomous weapons and long-term AI safety.
