About
Prof Stuart Macgregor holds the Chair in Computational Inorganic Chemistry at the University of St Andrews’ School of Chemistry. Previously, he was a full professor at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) and served as Head of the Institute of Chemical Sciences (2010–2015) and Co-Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Critical Resource Catalysis (CRITICAT, 2014–2022). His research focuses on computational chemistry, organometallic mechanisms, and solid-state reactivity, with emphasis on C–H and C–F activation in catalysis. Key contributions include studies on iridium-pincer complexes, ruthenium-catalyzed arylation, and transition metal-free C-H functionalization.
Education: BSc and PhD from the University of Edinburgh, followed by postdoctoral work at the Université de Paris-Sud (NATO Fellowship) and Australian National University.
Research interests span computational modeling of organometallic reactions, solid-state reactivity in crystalline materials, and design of catalytic systems for sustainable chemistry. Recent work highlights include isolobal iridium hydride complexes and zincation/alumination without transition metals.
Publications from 2023–2025 emphasize mechanistic studies of catalytic reactions, heterometallic complexes, and in crystallo reactivity. Notable awards include the RSC’s 2019 Ludwig Mond Award and FRSE election (2020).
Advising: Supervised PhD students Hrithik Manojkumar and Daniel Storm. Collaborates widely, including contributions to CRITICAT and projects funded via EPSRC and other grants.
Labs/teams: Active in the School of Chemistry’s computational and experimental facilities, leading interdisciplinary projects in catalysis and solid-state chemistry.
