Stuart Kaye

Stuart Kaye is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources & Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong. He has held leadership roles as Dean of Law at multiple universities, including the University of Western Australia and the University of Melbourne. His academic career spans over three decades, with a focus on international law, maritime boundaries, and ocean governance.

He holds law and arts degrees from the University of Sydney and a doctorate in law from Dalhousie University. His professional qualifications include being a Barrister in multiple Australian states and a Captain in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve, where he advises on legal matters relating to maritime operations.

Kaye’s research interests center on the law of the sea, maritime boundary delimitation, and international fisheries management. He authored influential works like Australia’s Maritime Boundaries and International Fisheries Management. His recent work addresses contemporary challenges such as maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, climate change impacts on maritime boundaries, and enforcement mechanisms under UNCLOS.

He has received prestigious awards, including the Medal of the Order of Australia (2024) and the Australian Red Cross Distinguished Service Medal. He serves on key bodies like the Australian Research Council College of Experts and the International Hydrographic Organization’s Panel of Experts.

Current research includes supervising PhDs on maritime enforcement in Indonesia and the Philippines, and leading the Australia Maritime Security Scholarships Program funded by DFAT. His interdisciplinary approach bridges law, policy, and security to address global oceanic challenges.
