Stuart Harris is a Professor of English at Cumberland University, affiliated with the Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education and the Arts. He joined Cumberland in 1997 after 11 years teaching English at Hunters Lane High School in Nashville. Dr. Harris holds a B.S. and B.A. from Belmont University, an M.A. in Teaching from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and a D.A. from Middle Tennessee State University.
His teaching focuses on Composition, Sophomore Literature, and American Literature, with past courses exploring Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, Southern Literature, and the American Novel. His research interests span creative writing (poetry and short stories), literary criticism (especially 19th- and 20th-century American authors), and innovative pedagogical approaches in literature education. He has published poetry, short stories, book reviews, and academic articles in journals like Tennessee English Journal and South Dakota Literary Review.
Dr. Harris has held significant administrative roles at Cumberland, including Faculty Senate President (2000–2001), Chair of the Professional Development Committee (2008–2010), and Chair of the University Committee on Courses, Curricula, and Academic Policy (2010–2012). He served as Program Director for English until January 2024.
