Stuart Foster

Stuart Foster is a Professor of History in Education and Executive Director of the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). He joined UCL in 2000 and has held leadership roles, including Head of the Academic Department of Arts and Humanities and Executive Director of the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme. His work bridges research and practice, with a focus on Holocaust education, curriculum development, and international collaborations.

Education: PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas, Austin, USA. Previously served as a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, USA.

Research Interests: Stuart’s research explores Holocaust education, improving pedagogical methods, and addressing historical misconceptions. He leads the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, which has impacted over 20,000 teachers and produced influential resources like the textbook Understanding the Holocaust. His current projects include the Empire, Migration and Belonging research initiative, funded by the Pears Foundation.

Achievements: The Battlefield Tours Programme, led by Foster, engaged 8,000 teachers and students and won five awards. His work emphasizes global impact, with speaking engagements in over 20 countries.

Advising & Grants: Supervised doctoral candidates from Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK, and the USA. Secured £21M in external funding since 2012 for educational initiatives.

Labs/Teams: Directs the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education and collaborates on the Empire, Migration and Belonging project. Engages with museums, governments, and international educators to advance historical literacy.
