Steyn Bergs is Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History. His research operates at the intersection of contemporary art, aesthetics, critical theory, political economy, and media theory.
Bergs examines infrastructures in contemporary art and artistic practices addressing uneven development and non-linear conceptions of time. His current projects analyze ruination aesthetics, postcolonial representations, and infrastructural metaphors in artistic practice.
His publications demonstrate expertise in African and postcolonial cinema, ecological art, and institutional critique. Recent work explores representations of infrastructure in Global South contexts and aesthetic responses to ecological crisis.
Bergs regularly collaborates with artists as a founding member of MAX, a Brussels-based space for artists and researchers.
