Steven Shapiro is a Lecturer in Law and Adjunct Faculty member at Columbia Law School, Columbia University. He also serves as the Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the nation's oldest and largest civil liberties organization. Previously, he joined the New York Civil Liberties Union in 1976 and has held leadership roles in human rights organizations, including membership on the Board of Directors of Human Rights First and the Policy Committee of Human Rights Watch.
Shapiro teaches courses on Current Issues in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights annually since Fall 2023, covering legal challenges and policy debates in civil rights. His work integrates advocacy with academic analysis, reflecting his expertise in constitutional law and systemic justice.
