Steven Reich

Dr. Steven Reich is a Professor in the History Department at James Madison University. His research focuses on American labor history, African American history, and Southern history. He holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and teaches courses in labor history, African American history, Southern history, and research methods.

His scholarship includes monographs like A Working People: A History of African American Workers since Emancipation and peer-reviewed articles analyzing the Great Migration’s literary impact and the NAACP’s role in the post-WWI South. He received the Louis Pelzer Memorial Award for his 1996 article on Black Texans’ citizenship struggles.

Reich serves on the Department of History Personnel Advisory Committee and has contributed to encyclopedic works on migration history. His work bridges labor dynamics, racial equity, and sociopolitical transformations in U.S. history.
