Steven MacDonald

Dr. Steven MacDonald is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at Teesside University’s School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law (SSSHL), where he contributes to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme as a Clinical Tutor, Personal and Professional Development Tutor, and Academic Supervisor for Advanced Independent Work. He is a HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist with a strong clinical background in adult learning disability services.

His research and clinical interests focus on psychological assessment and intervention for individuals with learning disabilities, particularly in the contexts of neuropsychology, neurodegenerative conditions like dementia, and trauma-informed care. He also explores systemic family therapy and LGBTQIA+ mental health. His research trends emphasize psychosocial interventions, ethical practice, and service evaluation in intellectual disability settings, as reflected in his publications on dementia care, rural ethics, and clinical audits.

Steven MacDonald has served as a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist with Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust and holds external roles as an External Examiner at the University of Essex and a reviewer for the Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities. He supervises doctoral theses and contributes to curriculum development in learning disability and neuropsychology.

He is actively involved in professional networks and research dissemination, with a research fingerprint highlighting expertise in intellectual disability, dementia, ethics, and rural mental health services.
