About
Steven Gygi, Ph.D., is a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the faculty director of two mass spectrometry (MS) core facilities: the Taplin Biological MS Facility and the Thermo Fisher Center for Multiplexed Proteomics (TCMP@HMS). His research focuses on developing and applying mass spectrometry-based proteomics technologies to study protein expression, modifications, interactions, and functional dynamics. Key initiatives include the BioPlex project, mapping the human protein-protein interactome, and advancing sample multiplexing techniques like Tandem Mass Tags (TMT) for high-throughput proteomics analysis.
Dr. Gygi received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Utah and completed postdoctoral work with Ruedi Aebersold at the University of Washington. His work has been supported by NIH grants, including roles as Principal Investigator (PI) on projects like 'Systematic Exploration of the Human Interactome IV' and co-PI on cancer signaling studies.
Research interests span proteomic profiling of cellular processes, disease mechanisms, and drug discovery. Recent work includes studies on mitochondrial function, lysosomal storage diseases, and Alzheimer’s disease proteostasis deficits. The Gygi Lab collaborates extensively, publishing in top journals like Nature, Cell, and Nature Biotechnology.
Grants and Funding: Gygi leads NIH-funded projects exploring interactome mapping, proteomic profiling, and signaling pathways. His lab also develops cutting-edge mass spectrometry tools for multiplexed analysis, enabling high-resolution biological insights.
Labs/Teams: Directs the TCMP@HMS and Taplin Facility, providing proteomics resources to the scientific community. Active in training students and postdocs in proteomics technology and application.
