Steven Eppell, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University's Case School of Engineering. He also serves as Director of the Nanoscale Orthopedic Biomaterials Laboratory (NOBL). His academic career includes a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University (1994) and a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Carleton College (1984).
Eppell's research focuses on bridging atomic to microscale measurements through advanced instrumentation and biomimetic strategies. Key areas include collagen fibril mechanics, biomaterial design for orthopedics, and nanoscale surface characterization using atomic force microscopy (AFM). His lab develops models to predict supramolecular assembly and investigates nanoscale constraints of natural bone/tendon for synthetic material creation.
Recent work emphasizes synthetic bone substitutes, dental implant stabilization, and collagen-titanium interface engineering. Over 80 publications span biomaterials, nanomechanics, and medical applications with frequent collaborations in materials science and biophysics. His instrumentation innovations include AFM-based charge quantification methods and cantilever dynamics modeling.
