Steven D. Smith is a Research Professor at the University of South Carolina's SC Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA), where he has worked since 1986 and currently serves as Director. He holds a B.A. in History from the Virginia Military Institute, an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Kentucky, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of South Carolina. His career includes roles as Deputy State Archaeologist and head of the Applied Research Division.
Dr. Smith's research focuses on historical archaeology of military sites, including Fort Polk and Fort Bragg, with emphasis on African American soldiers' experiences. His recent work examines Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields, resulting in publications like Partisans, Guerillas, and Irregulars and Francis Marion and the Snow’s Island Community.
He teaches 'Conflict Archaeology' and 'Anthropology of Warfare' in the Department of Anthropology.
