About
Steven C. Clemens is a Research Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Brown University, affiliated with the Climate & Environment research group. His work focuses on reconstructing monsoonal rainfall dynamics in Indian and East Asian systems using geochemical, isotopic, and sedimentological approaches. He holds a Ph.D. (1990), M.Sc. (1986), and B.A. (1983) from Brown University and Pomona College, respectively.
He leads the Benedum Stable Isotope Facility, analyzing carbon and oxygen isotopes in carbonate samples globally, supporting projects in marine geology, paleoceanography, and paleoclimate research. Clemens teaches courses including 'Introduction to Oceanography' and 'Descriptive Coastal and Estuarine Oceanography,' emphasizing climate change impacts on ocean systems.
His research addresses orbital-scale monsoon variability, influences of CO₂ and insolation on climate, and the mid-Pleistocene transition. Key contributions include studies on East Asian monsoon records from the South China Sea, Indian Ocean dynamics, and stable isotope applications in reconstructing past environmental conditions. Collaborations with institutions like IODP and co-authors Warren Prell and Yongsong Huang highlight his interdisciplinary approach to global climate systems.
