Steve Swayne is the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professor of Music at Dartmouth College, specializing in American musical theater, Russian music, and art music from 1700-present. His scholarship includes award-winning biographies of William Schuman and analyses of Sondheim's compositional development.
Swayne served as President of the American Musicological Society (2020-2022) and held the John W. Kluge Chair at the Library of Congress. His publications explore connections between musical structure and cultural context across diverse genres.
Current research examines composer David Diamond's life and works. An accomplished pianist, Swayne has taught at institutions including UC Berkeley and the San Francisco Conservatory.
