About
Dr Steve Michell is an Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology at the School of Biosciences, University of Exeter (2023–present). Previously, he served as Senior Lecturer (2012–2023) and Lecturer (2007–2012) at the same institution. His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly post-translational modifications of proteins (acylation, glycosylation) in Gram-negative and positive pathogens, and developing genetic tools for manipulating hazardous pathogens like Clostridium difficile, Vibrio vulnificus, and Burkholderia pseudomallei.
- Education
- BSc in Chemistry and Biochemistry, Imperial College (1993)
- PhD in Molecular Microbiology, Imperial College (1999)
His research group investigates secreted bacterial proteins as virulence factors, combining molecular biology with genomic approaches. Collaborations include work with Professor Rick Titball and international experts from institutions such as Imperial College, University of Nottingham, and CEFAS. He contributes to the Microbes and Disease research group and engages in interdisciplinary projects involving bioinformatics, clinical sciences, and public health.
Scientific honors include his recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2011). His career spans academic roles at the University of Exeter and prior research scientist positions at the Defence Science Technology Laboratories (2002–2007) and the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (1994–2002).
