Steve Barnes

Dr. Steve Barnes is an Associate Professor of European History at George Mason University, specializing in Soviet repression systems. His award-winning book Death and Redemption redefined scholarly understanding of the Gulag as a penal institution.

Research examines how Stalinist labor camps shaped social control mechanisms, with current projects analyzing women's survival strategies. As historical consultant for the Gulag Museum and National Parks Service, he bridges academic and public history.
