Stephen R. Halsey is a tenured Professor of Modern Chinese History at the University of Miami's Department of History. His work bridges historical scholarship and policy consulting, focusing on state power, economic development, and environmental change in China. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and additional training in international affairs at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
His first major work, *Quest for Power: European Imperialism and the Making of Chinese Statecraft* (2015), reinterprets China’s 19th-20th century trajectory as a foundation for its modern power. His current book project, *Prometheus Bound: Environmental Crisis and the Developmental State in Modern China*, examines China’s ecological and developmental challenges through a 'more-than-human' lens, analyzing the interplay of human exploitation and environmental consequences.
Halsey advises governments, NGOs, and businesses on East Asian affairs, specializing in fiscal crises, supply chain security, and environmental policy. He teaches courses in Chinese, East Asian, and global environmental history, as well as comparative imperialism and historiography.
