University of California , Santa Barbara (UCSB)About
Stephen Proulx is a Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology (EEMB) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), serving as the EEMB Vice Chair for Curriculum. He holds a BA in Mathematics and Biology from UC Santa Cruz and a PhD from the University of Utah. His postdoctoral research included studies at the University of Toronto and the University of Oregon. Prior to UCSB, he was a professor at Iowa State University before joining UCSB in 2008.
His research focuses on theoretical frameworks in evolutionary biology, employing mathematical and computational models to explore evolutionary processes. Key areas include the evolution of gene networks, decision-making in single-celled organisms, sexual selection, and experimental evolution using organisms like C. elegans and S. cerevisiae. His lab investigates how genetic architecture and environmental fluctuations influence evolutionary outcomes, with applications to ecological and genetic systems.
Dr. Proulx advises graduate students and mentors postdoctoral researchers, including current lab members such as Johanna Fornberg, Marisa Morse, and Taom Sakal. His work has been supported by grants from organizations like FRAPS and URCA, facilitating research on symbiotic relationships and experimental evolution. The Proulx Lab is part of UCSB’s EEMB department, contributing to interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of ecology, evolution, and molecular biology.
