Stephen Powell is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Concordia University. His research and teaching focus on medieval literature, the history of the English language, and textual criticism.
- Education: BA from Oberlin College, MA from Indiana University, PhD from the University of Toronto.
His research spans fourteenth- and fifteenth-century literature, particularly Chaucer and romance, alongside the post-medieval reception of the Middle Ages and editorial history. He is currently working on two major projects: a study of manuscript transmission of Middle English didactic romances and an examination of the editing history of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
Stephen’s teaching philosophy emphasizes student-driven learning, avoiding traditional lectures in favor of interactive environments where students develop analytical skills through discussion and critical thinking. He supervises graduate students in Old and Middle English, historical linguistics, and early modern literature.
