Stephen Nicholls

Prof Stephen Nicholls is a world-renowned cardiologist and academic leader, serving as Professor of Cardiology at the University of Adelaide and Director of MonashHeart at Monash University. He concurrently holds roles as Deputy Director and Heart Health Theme Leader at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and Principal Research Fellow at the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC).

His research focuses on translational strategies to reduce cardiovascular disease risk, including lipid-lowering therapies, genomic risk stratification, and clinical trial design for hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis. Since 2012, he has led high-impact projects such as the Optimised prosthetic heart valve surfaces initiative and contributed to pivotal trials like the Lp (a) HORIZON and STAREE. He has secured over $100 million in research funding and authored over 770 manuscripts, reviews, and conference papers.

Prof Nicholls’ work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals to improve global health outcomes. His recent articles emphasize non-statin lipid management, novel therapies for hypertriglyceridemia, and the integration of genomic data into cardiovascular risk assessment. Projects like the PROLONG-ANG3 and SHASTA-3 studies highlight his commitment to advancing clinical treatments and understanding lipid-related cardiovascular pathologies.
