Stephen M. McCauley is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Integrative & Global Studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), co-directing the Global Lab and Melbourne Project Center. He holds a PhD in Geography (Clark University, 2009), MA in Geography (University of Maryland, 2001), and BA in Economics (Loyola University of Maryland, 1996).
His research focuses on urban resilience, climate adaptation, environmental justice, and GIS applications in urban planning. Current work addresses urban heat islands and green infrastructure to mitigate extreme heat vulnerabilities. He co-leads the Melbourne Project Center, connecting WPI students with civic organizations in Australia to tackle technology, environment, and social challenges. The Global Lab, co-directed with Lesley Dodson, amplifies collaborative action-research through storytelling and cross-network coordination.
McCauley teaches field methodologies emphasizing community engagement and human-centered design, while advising project-based learning initiatives. He actively contributes to STEM+Arts, diversity/inclusion efforts, and dialogic practice at WPI.
