Stephen Kent

Stephen Kent serves as a Research Fellow at the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) within the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Birmingham. With 16 years of prior industry experience in UK railways, he joined the university in 2010 to support railway education and lead decarbonisation research.

His academic credentials include:

• BEng (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University (1993)
• MSc in Railway Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield (1998)

Research focuses on hydrogen traction systems and whole-life carbon reduction in rail, addressing critical challenges in sustainable transportation through wheel-rail adhesion studies and vehicle dynamics. His work bridges industry practice with academic innovation in railway decarbonisation.
