About
Dr Stephen Jones is a Senior Lecturer in Earth Systems at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on the influence of deep-Earth processes on climate, integrating mantle dynamics, oceanography, and atmospheric science. He leads projects exploring the Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum, Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, Greenland Ice Sheet evolution, and mantle convection systems.
Key research areas include:
- Mantle-crust interactions and their climatic impacts
- Climate change linked to large igneous provinces
- Geophysical and geochemical analysis of tectonic processes
Recent work includes co-evolution of continental margins, kimberlite volcanism drivers, and Bering Strait paleogeography. His publications span Nature, Nature Geoscience, and leading Earth Science journals. Dr Jones advises doctoral researchers across his research themes and collaborates internationally on projects like C-FORCE and DenGate.
Research highlights include:
- Linking mantle plumes to North Atlantic contourite architecture
- Quantifying mantle convection's role in sedimentary basin evolution
- Developing marine air quality monitoring through national research vessels
