Stephen Gage’s research focuses on the history of urban form in American and British cities, with particular emphasis on cultural institutions, landscape, public space, and the interplay between urban and rural environments in the 19th and 20th centuries. His work integrates archival research with drawing and mapping to visualize urban transformation over time. He explores how architectural and planning decisions reflect broader cultural ideals, especially in academic and civic institutions.
His recent publications reflect a consistent focus on architectural identity, urban culture, and the symbolic role of institutions. Themes include Collegiate Gothic architecture, the integration of sacred and civic space, and the ecological and cultural dimensions of urban planning. His research often examines paradoxes in urban design, such as the juxtaposition of modernity and tradition, density and green space, or industry and nature.
His scientific recognition includes:
- RIBA President's Award for Research (2014)
- Inaugural Bass Scholar in Architecture (2012)
Stephen was trained as an architect in the United States and worked at HOK in Chicago, contributing to large-scale commercial and institutional projects, including the award-winning Greenway Self Park. He has been actively involved with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) UK Chapter. While no formal advising or grant information is available, his academic trajectory reflects strong engagement in research, teaching, and professional practice.
His future research aims to explore Victorian Reading, Alfred Waterhouse, the Chicago Park System, and Inter-War London, continuing his inquiry into the relationship between urbanization and nature.
