About
Stephen Finney is Professor and Chair in Power Electronics at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering. His research focuses on power converter technologies, semiconductor device characterization, and control systems for energy applications. Recent work includes developing advanced magnetic field sensors for SiC modules (2025), neural network controllers for hybrid converters (2025), and optimizing switching strategies for reduced EMI (2024).
He leads research in the Energy Systems Institute and directs projects on DC power networks and offshore wind energy conversion. Key investigations include Network-DC (Innovate UK) developing DC circuit breaker models and Wind2DC focusing on medium-voltage DC technologies for floating offshore wind turbines.
